Peace of Mind, the Canadian Way

Home Watch is a fast-growing service across Canada, trusted by snowbirds, seasonal homeowners, and frequent travellers. The Canadian Home Watch Group (CHWG) helps ensure that every accredited Canadian business follows the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and detailed reporting.

While the National Home Watch Association (NHWA) defines Home Watch as “a visual inspection of a home or property, looking for obvious issues,” CHWG brings that definition into a uniquely Canadian context—combining NHWA’s proven standards with the care, reliability, and community values Canadians expect.

A Typical Canadian Home Watch Visit Includes:

A full walkthrough of the home’s interior and exterior

Visual checks for water leaks, mold, storm damage, or pest activity

Confirmation that HVAC systems, plumbing, and appliances are working as expected

Ensuring doors, windows, and key systems are secure

Watching for signs of forced entry or unauthorized access

Collecting mail, packages, or handling other homeowner-requested tasks

What We Do

Across Canada, the Home Watch industry has grown rapidly as more seasonal, vacation, and secondary homes need reliable care from coast to coast. Snowbirds, cottagers, and frequent travelers all depend on Home Watch professionals to safeguard their properties.

But here’s the challenge: Home Watch is still an unregulated and unclassified profession in Canada. At the federal, provincial, and municipal levels, there’s no formal recognition of the industry. That means:

  • No required insurance or bonding

  • No standardized inspection or reporting procedures

  • No enforced best practices

In other words, there’s no built-in accountability.

That’s where the Canadian Home Watch Group (CHWG) steps in. We establish the standards that Canadian homeowners can trust—ensuring accredited businesses uphold professionalism, integrity, and reliable service every time. With CHWG, Home Watch in Canada isn’t just a service—it’s a recognized standard of care.

Our Foundation

Back in 2009, the idea of creating a unified organization for Home Watch businesses first took shape. At the time, companies across North America were operating under many different names, without shared standards or oversight. The goal was simple but critical: establish clear standards, best practices, procedures, and ethics for those providing Home Watch services.

Without proper structure—such as required insurance and bonding—homeowners can be left vulnerable to property damage, liability claims, or costly legal issues.

As the industry evolved, Canada’s role became increasingly important. In recent years, more and more Canadians have launched Home Watch businesses, often in response to homeowner insurance requirements for vacant or seasonal properties. To meet this need and ensure legitimacy across the country, the Canadian Home Watch Group (CHWG) was created.

Today, thanks to the efforts of members, advisors, and partners, the Canadian Home Watch Group, National Home Watch Association, and International Home Watch Association stand as trusted authorities—championing professionalism and accountability in the Home Watch profession worldwide, and ensuring Canadian homeowners have a recognized, credible standard of care.

Many people confuse accreditation with certification — but they’re not the same.

Accreditation vs. Certification: What’s the Difference?

CHWG Accreditation (For Businesses)

Accreditation is earned by companies that meet CHWG’s strict requirements. It’s a full vetting process that establishes a business as professional, trustworthy, and accountable.

To become accredited, a business must:

  • Pass a criminal background check on all company principals

  • Undergo consumer affairs and BBB inquiries

  • Verify all required business licenses at the provincial, municipal, or local level

  • Provide proof of ongoing liability insurance and bonding

  • Adhere to CHWG best practices and Code of Ethics

Accredited businesses are reviewed annually to maintain their status, ensuring standards are always upheld.
CHWP: Certified Home Watch Professional (For Individuals)

Certification is earned by people—principals or employees—who complete training and prove their expertise in Home Watch.

To become a Certified Home Watch Professional (CHWP):

  • The individual must work for or own a CHWG-accredited company

  • Meet hands-on experience requirements

  • Complete CHWG’s core and regional training curriculum

  • Pass the official CHWG certification exam

  • Recertify every 2 years with continuing education and a renewal exam

Accreditation = Business credibility.
Certification = Personal expertise.

What Home Watch Is (and Isn’t)

Part of our mission at the Canadian Home Watch Group (CHWG) is to make sure homeowners understand exactly what Home Watch means—and what it doesn’t.

❌ It is not a security service. While Home Watch provides peace of mind by placing a trained professional in the home on a regular basis, it does not replace an alarm system or licensed security provider.

❌ It is not house-sitting. A house sitter lives in the home while you’re away. Home Watch is different—it’s a scheduled, professional service, not a live-in arrangement.

✅ Home Watch is a professional inspection service. Accredited providers perform scheduled, visual checks of a home or property, looking for clear signs of issues. If anything is discovered—such as water leaks, weather damage, or forced entry—the provider immediately alerts the homeowner and follows their instructions on next steps.
